MELON :: 2018 STATS

We gave one watermelon and one cantaloupe to food pantries to distribute to the vulnerable and in need.

That was still 20 pounds worth of melon! 🙌🏻

Ya. We always look for the silver lining because not everything works as well as we plan. We planted two watermelon vines, the second because the first sort of, well, we’re not sure what happened. But, needless to say, it didn’t survive. The other went in late, so although we had many other watermelons growing, they didn’t come to fruition when the frost hit in November.

The cantaloupe, we tried to grow vertically, and again, had several almost ready but then the frost hit. Bummer. But as we’ve said before, seasons come and seasons go.

Why do we grow melon?
WATERMELON: Eating watermelon, or drinking watermelon juice, may have several health benefits, including lower blood pressure, improved insulin sensitivity and reduced muscle soreness. It is a good source of vitamin C, and also contains potassium, copper, vitamins B5, and A. And talk about getting your water intake for the day. Check!

CANTALOUPE: When it comes to beta carotene, cantaloupe knocks other yellow-orange fruits out of the park. It also packs in Vitamin C, folate, fiber, potassium, and other vitamins and minerals.

We will be altering how we grow both of these fruits in 2019. If not anything else, some of the plants have proved us to be tuition....a learning experience. And then we try again. 🍉
